How to make velocity edits in CapCut
By the Edit Mastery team · Updated

A velocity edit is an edit where each clip speeds up and slows down with the music. In CapCut, you add a speed curve to each clip (slow on the build, fast on the hit), line the fast parts up with the beats, and smooth the slow motion so it doesn't stutter. The music and the timing of the ramps matter more than the effects.
What makes a velocity edit
- Speed ramps: the clip goes from slow to fast (or fast to slow) inside one shot.
- Beat sync: the fast part lands exactly on a beat of the track.
- Smooth slow motion: slowed parts look fluid instead of choppy.
- A few accents: a shake or a flash on the strongest hits, not everywhere.
Step by step in CapCut
- 1Pick a track with clear hits
Velocity edits need a beat you can hear: phonk, hype tracks or anything with a strong kick and drop.
- 2Mark the beats
Add beat markers on the track (automatically or by tapping), so you know where every ramp must land.
- 3Trim one clip per beat or phrase
Short clips work best. Keep the most dynamic part of each shot.
- 4Add a speed curve
Select a clip, open Speed and choose the curve option. Start from a preset ramp, then drag the points so the clip is slow before the beat and fast on it. Exact names can change between CapCut versions.
- 5Smooth the slow parts
Turn on CapCut's smooth slow-motion option (frame interpolation) where it's available, especially on footage shot at 30 fps.
- 6Accent the hits
On the biggest beats, add a quick zoom punch or a light shake. Keep the rest clean so the ramps stay the star.
- 7Check it with sound
Watch it several times with headphones. If a ramp feels late, move the curve point, not the music.
Common velocity mistakes
| Mistake | What it looks like | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ramps off the beat | The speed change happens just after the hit | Align the fastest point of the curve with the beat marker |
| Choppy slow motion | The slowed part stutters | Use smooth slow-mo / higher frame rate footage |
| Same ramp on every clip | The edit feels repetitive | Vary the curve: some clips slow-fast, some fast-slow |
| Too many effects | Shakes and flashes on every beat | Save effects for the drop and the biggest hits |
