How to sync an edit to the beat in CapCut
By the Edit Mastery team · Updated
To sync an edit to the beat in CapCut, select your music track, open the Beats tool and let it add beat markers automatically (or tap to add them by hand while the track plays). Then trim each clip so it starts on a marker, and put your best clip exactly on the drop. Cuts that land on the beat are the biggest difference between a beginner edit and a clean one.
Step by step
- 1Add your track first
Import the music before arranging clips, so the beat drives the timing.
- 2Add beat markers
Select the audio and open Beats. Use the automatic option to place markers, or play the track and tap to add a marker on each hit. Tool names can change between CapCut versions.
- 3Find the drop
Listen for the moment the energy hits and mark it. That's where your strongest clip goes.
- 4Cut on the markers
Trim each clip so it starts on a marker. Zoom into the timeline to snap cuts precisely.
- 5Accent the hits
On the biggest beats, add a zoom punch, a shake or a quick flash. Keep the rest clean.
Tips that make it feel pro
- Cut on the beat, but not on every beat: vary the rhythm so the drop feels bigger.
- Slow down just before the drop (speed ramp), then hit hard on it.
- Use a short silence or a sound effect right before the drop to build tension.
Automatic or manual beat markers?
A good workflow: let CapCut place markers automatically, then delete the ones you won't use and add your own on the drop and the strongest hits.
| Automatic markers | Manual markers | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Instant | One listen of the track |
| Accuracy | Good on clear beats, can miss on complex tracks | Exactly where you hear the hits |
| Best for | Fast first draft | The drop and the key hits |
Which beats to cut on
- The kick (the low thump): the main rhythm, good for steady cuts in the build.
- The snare or clap: sharper hits, good for flashes and zoom punches.
- The drop: the single most important moment, your best clip goes here.
- Silence before the drop: hold a clip or slow down to build tension, then cut hard.
Fixing an edit that feels off-beat
- 1Listen with headphones
Off-beat cuts are easier to hear than to see.
- 2Zoom into the timeline
Check each cut frame by frame against its marker.
- 3Move the cut, not the music
Keep the track fixed and trim the clips to the markers.
- 4Cut on fewer beats
If it feels busy, skip some beats in the build so the drop hits harder.
Questions people ask
Why don't my cuts feel on beat?
Usually the cut lands a few frames late. Zoom into the timeline and align the start of the clip exactly on the marker.
Can CapCut detect beats automatically?
Yes, CapCut can place beat markers on a track for you, and you can add or remove markers by hand.
